Detroit: Mudgie’s Deli
Mudgie’s Deli is the epitome of Detroit vegan sandwich joint destinations.
When my Detroit-native buddy told me about this quintessential Detroit sandwich spot (now that we had binge watched most of Detroiters during my visit) I was so excited that I half-expected Tim or Sam to jump out from behind my bar stool. I ordered a rendition of a vegan BLT with an obligatory bag of Better Made potato chips to authenticate my Detroit(ers) experience. Between the freshly baked rye bread slices, the seitan-based thick bacon & the smoky vegan cheddar, crispy lettuce and clearly in-season tomato slices turned me into an alt version of myself. I’m pretty sure the epic garlic pickle spears were housemade, but I wolfed mine down before remembering to ask.
*Pro-tip: Cautiously make fun of Faygo within earshot of any of the bartenders or baristas because it’s not as kitschy of Detroit trivia as you’d expect and I think I heard a few crickets when I made a joke about Michigan’s pop situation. Will eat at Mudgie’s Deli for lunch at least once every time I’m visiting Detroit.
